Average Weight:

4-8 pounds

Average Life Span:

On average, Maltese can live 12-15 years. Although, some have reached 16-17 years with good care.

Average Height:

Maltese average between 7-12 inches height.

Exercise and Training:

Maltese are energetic and do not require a lot of exercise.  Playtime in the backyard or even indoors should be enough to keep them happy and in good shape.

They are intelligent and can learn tricks easily.  Consistency is important with training and they respond well to positive reinforcement.

Diet:

Maltese dogs are considered small breed dogs, which can make them more vulnerable to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) if they don’t eat frequently enough. To help prevent this, it’s important to feed your Maltese puppy small meals three to four times a day. Around 4 months of age, their ability to regulate blood sugar improves, and you can begin transitioning them to two or three meals daily.

As adults, Maltese typically do well with two meals a day—one in the morning and one in the evening. However, because this breed can be prone to obesity, be mindful not to overfeed. Keeping your pup at a healthy weight with proper portion control supports long-term wellness and an ideal body condition score.

It is always best to consult with your veterinarian as to the best diet specific to your pup.  On average, a Maltese gets between ¼ to ½ cup of dry food throughout 2 meals a day.   It is best to avoid giving human food or table scraps as that can lead to excessive weight gain.

Always keep fresh clean water available.  Make sure to clean both water and food dishes on a regular basis.

Minimum of once a week brushing or combing, but best daily.
